13th Annual Literacy Breakfast a Success!

With over 300 guests in attendance at BTC’s Settlemyer Hall, our 13th Annual Literacy Breakfast with Nancy Pearl was a great success! We raised $30,000 for our organization, which will help us to continue providing one-to-one tutoring and small class services to the community and expand our reach farther into the county with new programs.
With a focus on literacy as a social justice issue, we heard profound statements and statistics from the City of Bellingham’s Marie Marchand and MyTrafficMan.Net’s Ziad Youssef on the current state of illiteracy on a local and global scale. We were also deeply moved by stories from tutor Juliane and her former learner Janice who shared their experiences working together and the tremendous rewards they gained from their time with the Whatcom Literacy Council. And of course, Nancy’s book reviews excited the crowd and enticed them to make immediate purchases thanks to Village Books’ pop-up store in the Campus Center lobby.
We’d like to extend one final special thanks to our presenting Nobel sponsors, Wilson Engineering and MyTrafficMan.Net Legal Care Center Academy, and to our Newberry sponsors; BP Cherry Point Refinery, Alcoa Intelco Works, Barron Smith Daugert, and Bramble Berry. Your generous support made this event possible. Additional thanks go to Jake Fowler and the BTC hospitality staff for a fantastic job with the facility setup and breakfast service. You made us look good!
Now, we’re onto preparations for the Trivia Bee. More information to follow in the new year.
