New Whatcom County Jail Tutoring Program Underway

Thanks to the organizing efforts of Lt. Ernie Stach and ALP Coordinator Dan Ruiz, the Whatcom Literacy Council and Whatcom County Jail have forged a partnership where inmates have the opportunity to earn “good time” reductions from their sentences for every hour they work with one of our tutors on basic adult education skills. On October 19, Dan interviewed the program’s first two inmate learners, and on October 28, Dan and Lt. Stach will meet with our first two program volunteers to go over security measures and tutoring procedures. We are starting with two pairs on the 28th, but Lt. Stach already has another male inmate interested in learning to read with a tutor, and Dan has two female volunteers eager to tutor inmates in the jail’s female population. To meet these demands, Lt. Stach is currently working to find female inmates needing our services, and Dan is currently locating a tutor to work with the third identified inmate. We are off to a great start!  More updates to follow as the program develops.
